MHT London’s Neighbourhood Investment Unit won the 24Housing Retrofit Award 2010 for improving energy efficiency in existing properties.
Seb Junemann, Environmental Sustainability Officer, said upon receiving the award: “We are delighted with the win. The team have worked really hard…this award demonstrates our commitment to sustainable issues and best practice”.
The Neighbourhood Investment Programme refurbishes Victorian street properties to a Decent Homes ++ Standard to provide good quality homes. Residents are decanted from their property whilst works are undertaken, which can take up to 14 weeks. Residents returning to their refurbished properties receive an ‘eco-welcome pack’ and MHT London also employs a Resident Liaison Officer to work with residents and the community throughout process.
Competing with four other housing associations, the submission highlighted the Unit’s work which aims to reduce CO2 in existing properties in the London Borough of Haringey. The Investment Unit, a small regeneration team, was tasked with carrying out a ‘whole-house’ package of works on 600 hard-to-treat homes with high reactive repairs costs.
Refurbished homes typically achieve more than a 45% reduction in CO2 emissions. Subsequently, residents are able to halve their fuel costs and are being supported to make changes in their behaviour, reducing the risk of fuel poverty.
Improvements include:
- Loft insulation, floor insulation under suspended timber floors, double glazed windows, low energy lighting.
- Sound insulation between flats, electrical rewiring, structural works, new bathrooms and kitchens.
- Complete central heating upgrades including A-rated condensing combi boiler, TRVs and room thermostats.
Representatives from the team, Seb Junemann and Helen Wilkins, Relationship Manager collected the award on behalf of the team.
