Our local offices will be open from 8:30am until 5pm on Friday 23rd December. They will reopen for normal hours between 28th-30th December. The office will be closed on 2nd January due to the Bank Holiday, but will reopen during normal hours from 3rd January. Read on…

The ‘Festive’ season is approaching and this can be a very stressful time for many people. Enquiries about divorce increase just after Christmas and one of the reasons for these enquiries is abuse.

The incidents of domestic violence and abuse increase during the Christmas period and this can be due to a number of factors including financial worries and an increased consumption of alcohol.

Media put in the spotlight over coverage of the riots

Young people and media practitioners are to get the chance to meet and air their views about whether media coverage about England’s August riots was biased. The Media and the Riots Conference, will be held on Saturday 26 November at the London College of Communication in south London between 10am and 3pm.

The conference is being hosted jointly by the Citizen Journalism Educational Trust, and The-Latest.Com, and is supported by the London College of Communication and organisations like social landlord Metropolitan Housing Partnership. It’s being organised entirely by volunteers and is not funded, so is relying on donations and delegates fees to pay for the event. Read on…

Ebony horse club riding high

HorseA £1.7m horse riding centre in Brixton, South London, has been officially opened by the Duchess of Cornwall.

The Ebony Horse Club is a charity that aims to improve the life skills, education and aspirations of children and young people in Lambeth. MHT London was involved in the development stages of the new riding centre and has already seen a number of its young residents benefiting from the project.

The new riding centre has stabling for eight ponies and horses, a stable yard, paddock, floodlit arena, tack room, classroom and offices. The activities provided by youth workers include riding lessons, classes about horse care and holidays for senior young riders. Read on…

Lambeth’s job fair for local residents

Lambeth residents are being invited to attend a free jobs fair at Lambeth Town Hall in the Assembly Hall on Friday 4th November 2011 from 11am to 3pm.

The fair is being coordinated in a partnership between L&Q, Metropolitan Housing Trust, Viridian Housing, Hyde Housing (Hyde Southbank), Lambeth Council and the Jobcentre Plus. 28 organisations will be in attendance, offering employment, advice, tips and information to job seekers.

At the fair, attendees will be able to meet employers, get advice on CV writing, interview techniques and applications online as well as guidance on getting back into employment after an extended break. Employers will be advertising vacancies, apprenticeships and other available opportunities at the fair. Read on…

Brixton Reel Film Festival

Brixton Reel Film FestivalThe Community Investment team have partnered with Straight Curve and the PYEproject to produce a short film highlighting actions you can take to improve your own mental wellbeing. The film Connect, was produced by young people living on and around St Martins estate who directed and developed the script as well as doing the audio, lighting and filming.  The film will be screened for the first time at the Ritzy Cinema in Brixton as part of the Brixton Reel Film Festival (http://www.brixtonreel.co.uk/).

The festival is dedicated to working with diverse local communities in the London Borough of Lambeth to show the best new films and arts, which explore well-being, and community and self empowerment.

Finding the solution within our communities

Sandra FergusonFollowing the recent disturbances in London and other cities across the country it is important that we listen to communities who will often have the solution to the problem. We also need to help find the resources to deliver on those solutions.

Metropolitan Housing Partnership (MHP) works alongside residents and communities across London, Midlands and Cambridgeshire.   In addition to providing people with homes, we develop and deliver a range of community investment programmes including Employment and Youth Programmes.   There are many lessons to be learnt from this approach including how you can enable local community groups to have an active and positive role in society.

Foundations laid for football development at Brixton housing estate

The Football FoundationFootballers from the Moorlands Estate, Brixton, were celebrating today following a £5,000 Grow the Game grant awarded by the Football Foundation, the country’s largest sports charity.

Currently playing at Hillmead School in Brixton, the funding boost will allow Metropolitan Housing Trust (MHT) London, which is part of Metropolitan Housing Partnership, to develop two new teams over the next three years. The grant will also be used to recruit and train new volunteers to become fully qualified FA coaches.

MHT London scores £1,000 grant

The Daily Telegraph in partnership with RBS, is supporting local sports clubs through its Sport for You grants. Metropolitan Housing Trust (MHT) London, which is part of Metropolitan Housing Partnership, has been successfully awarded a £1,000 grant to support a football club for women living on the Chalkhill estate in Brent, London.

This particular group of women do not traditionally participate in community activities as most are Somalian and some are asylum seekers, presenting a range of cultural differences. The joint project between MHT London and the Al-Bahdja Community Group, however, has opened up lines of communication and helped them to adjust to life on the estate.

MHT London residents get active

MHT Get ActiveAn exciting development and fitness opportunity is available to 16 – 25 year olds who are unemployed and living in the Brixton area.

Metropolitan Housing Trust (MHT) London, which is part of Metropolitan Housing Partnership, is offering martial arts sessions with a qualified instructor free of charge to people who fit within this group. The sessions take place on the Moorlands and St. Martin’s estates and are part of a wider self-development program.

Jide Pitan, an MHT London resident on the Moorlands estate, is the founder of the program which was developed to address physical fitness, nutrition and life-coaching and provide skills to help young people get into training and employment.
