Moving on

Moving on

There may come a time to move to another home. It may because there have been changes in your personal circumstances (your family has grown), you’ve change jobs and want to move to a different area or you have different mobility needs. Fortunately there are a number of options available. Whatever the case, we always try to do our best to help our residents transfer to a property that better suits their needs.

There are a number of factors that will determine the best option for you.

An internal transfer is usually considered when your circumstances have significantly changed since you were first housed in your current property. This could include the addition of family members leading to overcrowding, ill health causing mobility problems or the fear of harassment or violence.

A mutual exchange is when two or more social housing tenants agree to swap properties. You are responsible for finding an interested second party to exchange with. All parties, including landlords, must agree to the exchange.

MHT London are members of the web-based House Exchange scheme and Homeswapper. Both schemes are easy to use, updated regularly and offer different ways of searching for an exchange. New users are joining all the time and more landlords are offering the scheme to their tenants. To register, please visit www.houseexchange.org.uk or www.homeswapper.co.uk or call us for more information.

The NewBuild HomeBuy scheme (formerly known as shared ownership), lets you part-own, part-rent a property - giving you a more affordable option than buying a property outright. Call Metropolitan Home Ownership (part of Metropolitan Housing Partnership) on 020 8920 7777 for more information.

Local authority re-housing will depend on the housing register rules of your particular local authority. You will need to check with them as not all local authorities allow a settled tenant to be placed on their waiting list.

The Seaside and Country HOMES scheme is for tenants who are over 60 years old and would like to give up their Greater London property for a flat or bungalow located in seaside towns or countryside areas. For more information contact Seaside and Country HOMES directly on 08450 21 20 20 or visit their website at www.housingmoves.org.

If you decide to switch to privately rented accommodation, the internet or local newspapers are a good source for comparing rents and finding properties in your local area. Try sites such as www.findaproperty.com.

Please note that for all these options, you must have a clear rent account before you can move.

To discuss any of the above options, contact us on 0800 783 2399.
