Decent homes

What is a Decent Home?

In order to be decent a home should be warm, weatherproof and have reasonably modern facilities.

Decent homes are important for the health and well-being of those living in them. Poor housing helps an area to get a bad reputation. That makes it an unpopular place to live, which in turn may lead to the breakdown of communities. In short decent homes are a key element of any thriving, sustainable community.

MHT London is working towards having all our properties meet the Decent Homes Standard set by the government for 2010.

This year, 1,038 properties have been identified for Decent Home work. These properties will have a survey carried out to find out exactly what improvements need to be made. A home may need a new bathroom or kitchen or the electrical wiring may be insufficient and need replacing. Some houses will need greater improvements than others to ensure they meet the standard. In some instances you may need to move out of your home for a short while during the renovations.

Top tip

Turning your thermostat down on your central heating by one degree can reduce your household fuel bill by 10%.

Top tip

Improve the efficiency of radiators - Make a heat reflector to put behind the radiators by taping heavy duty aluminium foil onto a piece of cardboard with the shiny side facing out. The heat will bounce of the foil and into your room instead of being absorbed by the wall.
