Home contents insurance

We strongly recommend that you take out home contents insurance when you become a MHT London resident.

Home contents insurance

Taking out home contents insurance protects your possessions, such as your furniture, bed, clothes and children’s toys, against loss or damage from events such as kitchen fires, burst pipes and thefts.

There are different levels of cover available, so you should be able to find a cover to suit your needs. You might even be surprised at how little you have to pay. Many schemes give you the option to pay monthly - sometimes with a payment card at the post office.

Home contents insurance through Metropolitan Housing Partnership

Metropolitan Housing Partnership (MHP) has introduced a home contents insurance scheme designed specifically to meet your needs. It is available to all tenants, leaseholders and service users of all MHP businesses.

  • Insuring your contents to the value of £10,000 can cost as little as £1.20 a week.
  • If you do need to make a claim, you will not have to pay an excess (on other schemes this can be £100 or more).
  • The sum insured is increased by 15% during religious festivals, to take into account extra presents that may be in your home during these periods.

Read the MHP Contents Insurance leaflet for more information.

Top tips for saving money

Turn down your thermostat by 1 degree centigrade. It doesn’t sound like much, but it could reduce your energy use by around 10% and save you money.

Why not consider paying your bill monthly? Lots of gas suppliers offer discounts to customers who pay a fixed amount every month.

Ask your supplier what savings you could make if you go for a ‘dual-fuel deal’, which means that you buy your gas and electricity from the one supplier, rather than buying them separately from two different suppliers.

Choosing ‘paperless billing’ can also save you money: many gas suppliers offer reductions if you opt for online billing and pay by direct debit.
