Home security

Here are some simple tips and measures to help reduce your chances of becoming a target for crime.

  • Make sure that you lock all windows and doors, even if just leaving your home for a few minutes. Intruders only need a few seconds to ruin your day. If you have a burglar alarm, make sure it is set.
  • Make the home look occupied. Burglars do not want to be seen or disturbed. Convincing them that someone is at home is undoubtedly the best deterrent.
  • When you are not home use automatic timer-switches to turn your lights on when it goes dark.
  • A plug-in timer for the radio would make it sound as if someone was home.
  • Make sure expensive items like televisions and stereos cannot be seen from outside.
  • Do not hide door keys under mats. The first place a burglar will look for a house key is under a mat. Rocks, flower pots and door ledges are next on a burglars search list. If you must leave a key for emergency purposes make sure that you leave it with a trusted friend or family member.
  • Keep your shed, garage and external stores locked. Easy access to tools could help a thief gain entry into your home and never leave ladders lying about.
  • Use a UV pen to mark your property with your postcode and house number so they can be returned to you if stolen.
  • If you have window locks use them and if you live on the ground floor make sure the windows are closed at night and when you are out.
  • Don't let anyone into your property unless you know who they are.
  • Always ask all callers to prove their identity before letting them in. All our staff and contractors and workers from the gas, electricity or water board or police officers have identity cards for this reason. If you are suspicious call the police.
  • If you have a security chain, put it on before answering the door.
