Save water
There’s lots you can do to save water. You won’t have to alter your daily routine much and these tips could save you time and money!
In the kitchen
- Wash vegetables and fruit in a bowl rather than under a running tap, then use the leftover water for watering house plants.
- When you boil water in saucepans andkettles, use the minimumamount of water, that way, you'll save energy as well as water.
- Wait until you have afull loadbefore switching on thedishwasheror washing machine.
In the bathroom
- Don't leave the tap running while you brush your teeth, shave or wash your hands. This can waste up to 9 litresof water per minute.
- Showers use about 9 litres of water per minute. A 5 minute shower uses about a third of the water of a bath.
- Old toilet cisterns can use as much as 9 litresof clean water every flush. Reduce this by placing a 'save-a-flush' or 'hippo' in the cistern. These are often available free of charge from your local water company.
General
- Dripping taps can waste up to 15 litres of water a day. Replace worn tap washers for a quick and cheap way of saving water.
- Buy a water butt to collect rain water - you’ll save mains water and the energy used to treat it
